Halifax Water says ‘significant’ work is being carried out in Lower Sackville to replace a section of water main that is failing prematurely.
The utility and its contractors starting the work near the intersection of Cobequid Road and Glendale Drive on Monday, which is expected to continue for two to three weeks.
About 500 feet of the water main is being replaced after repair work was carried out in the area last week, which resulted in the water being shut off for some customers in the Lower Sackville, Waverley, Fall River, Lakeview, and Windsor Junction areas.
Halifax Water says it recognizes customers have been frustrated with the water main breaks, and it apologizes for the inconvenience.
“When the scale of the issue became clear in 2020, we repaired the water main in the most cost-effective way for our customers, but it failed several more times.” Halifax Water said in a news release. “Based on our investigation, we now understand that soil conditions in this area have caused damage to the existing pipe. Now that we have a better understanding of the cause, we are moving quickly to address this issue.”
The utility anticipates there will be a 48-72-hour window during the work where customers will experience lower than normal water pressure. Impacted residents may also be asked to voluntarily reduce their non-essential water usage to help ensure everyone has water when they need it
